Common Lash Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
Even experienced lash techs make mistakes, so complete newbie lash tech’s need to know the common mistakes to perfect their lash skills.
Here’s what to look out for:
1. Not Isolating the Natural Lashes Properly
Failing to isolate each natural lash can cause lashes to stick together or clump, leading to poor retention & discomfort.
Tip: Use precision isolation tweezers & take your time to isolate each natural lash one at a time. It is time-consuming but worth it in the long term, & you will have your clients coming back & build a loyal relationship with them.
2. Using too much Lash Adhesive
Excess lash glue can create stickies & thick clumpy lashes that will not bond correctly onto the natural lash, causing lash retention issues & possible irritation to your client’s eyes.
Tip: Use just enough lash adhesive for a secure lash bond, think small dot, not a big blob! (We recommend using a Glue Dot & Jade Stone for lash glue use.
3. Choosing the wrong lash length or curl
Using eyelash extensions that are too thick, long or over curled, for a client’s natural lashes can cause damage to the client’s lashes & create a very odd lash look!
Tip: Choose a lash length, thickness & curl to suit the client’s natural lashes, lifestyle, & eye shape for comfort & beauty.
4. Not offering a client consultation
Every client’s lashes, eye shape, & lifestyle are different.
Not carrying out a proper lash medical consultation can lead to problems.
Not only do we need to patch test each & every lash client, but we also need to assess the client’s natural lashes, eye makeup free, to check whether we can manage the client’s expectations.
Filling in a medical consultation form is a MUST as we need to check for any contraindications or medical issues that may prevent your client from having lashes.
Carrying out a patch test is essential at least 48 x before your client’s lash appointment is a MUST!
Never skip this process!
Tip: Ask questions about their medical & lash history, talk through their desired lash style, & if they have had any allergies before with eyelash extensions.
5. Not Maintaining Proper Salon/Therapist Hygiene
Touching lashes with dirty hands or tools, & not sanitising salon equipment, can cause a variety of infections.
Tip: Always wash hands before & after each client, use disposable tools where possible, & sanitise tweezers & lash stations.
6. Pulling or Tugging Natural Lashes
Forcefully applying or removing lash extensions can damage the natural lash, causing breakage or loss.
Be very careful when you are removing a full or partial set of lash extensions.
Follow your professional lash brand removal process & your lash trainer’s advice. (This process should have been taught on your training day.)
Also, when applying eyelash extensions, be very careful & gentle, not to cause a contra-action (which is something we do as a lash tech, i.e., dropping lash glue on your client, pinching client’s skin with tweezers, etc..)
Use a professional, branded lash adhesive remover & follow their guidelines for use.
Tip: Be gentle & patient, especially when removing eyelash extensions.
7. Neglecting Aftercare Advice
Clients who are not given professional lash aftercare advice may experience early lash shedding & lash irritation. (due to not knowing the maintenance required post-treatment.)
Tip: Provide clear aftercare instructions, avoid oil-based products, on or near the lashes, excessive rubbing, water & too much heat for the first 24–48 hours. (saunas, vigorous exercise & swimming)
Pro Tip for Beginners: Always use professional, quality lash products.
