What Parents need to know about teenagers & lash extension treatments…
The beauty industry has seen a huge growth in the eyelash extensions industry over the years.
This beauty trend has & continues to capture the attention of teenagers.
As semi-permanent cosmetic beauty treatments become more mainstream, parents find themselves navigating questions about age-appropriate beauty treatments and when to say yes to their teenagers asking for the latest must-have beauty treatment requests for eyelash extensions, etc.
Let’s talk about eyelash extensions, Pros & Cons for teenagers
What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are 1-1 or multiple fan lash extensions individually applied to the client’s natural eyelashes.
They are usually made of PBT synthetic fibres to mimic & enhance the natural lashes, creating length, volume, & curl.
Eyelash extension application can take between 1-3 hours and requires maintenance infills every 2-3 weeks, to keep the lashes looking full & help to maintain the health of the natural lashes.
Unlike strip lashes that are applied and removed daily, eyelash extensions are designed to last several weeks with the correct aftercare.
We would recommend that eyelash extensions be removed by a professional lash technician if the clients are not booking infill appointments & only want eyelash extensions as a one-off special occasion treat.
Tugging & pulling eyelash extensions will damage & cause loss of the natural lashes!
Age Restrictions & Industry Standards:
Currently, as a lash supplier company, we do not encourage eyelash extensions to be applied to clients under the age of 16.
Our ABT insurance requires this age as the minimum age to have eyelash extension treatments.
However, many countries & individual salons have established their policies.
(Please check with your suppliers & insurance guidelines.)
KG Lash Supplies / ABT Insurance Policy Recommendations:
For eyelash extensions & lash lifts, being basic treatments, our policy allows clients aged 16 and older to consent for themselves.
For any clients under the age of 16, they will need written parental consent and a parent/guardian present during the treatment.
This is only as long as your training & manufacturer’s guidelines do not state anything other than this.
For example, if your manufacturer’s guidelines state you must only perform the treatment on clients aged 18 and older, you must ensure you follow this.
Regulations:
Most salons & beauty companies require parental consent for cosmetic procedures on teenagers, though lash extensions often fall into a grey area between cosmetics and semi-permanent treatments.
Salon Policies:
Many reputable salons set their minimum age requirements, typically ranging from 16 to 18 years old.
Requesting parental consent and the presence of a parent for clients under the age of 18.
Industry Recommendations
Professional lash technicians often recommend waiting until at least age 18, when teenagers have developed a better understanding of proper aftercare & more mature decision-making & understanding.
Why do teenagers want Lash Extensions?
There are quite a few factors that drive a teenager’s interest in eyelash extension treatments:
• Social Media Influence: Platforms like Instagram & TikTok showcase dramatic lash transformations
• Convenience: Extensions eliminate daily mascara application
• Confidence Boost: Fuller lashes can enhance self-esteem during teenage years
• Peer Pressure: Friends getting extensions can create social pressure to follow suit
• Special Events: Prom, graduation, or other milestones may motivate the need/want for eyelash extensions
Potential Risks and Considerations:
Parents should be aware of several concerns when considering allowing their teenagers to have eyelash extensions:
Physical Risks
• Allergic reactions to eyelash extension adhesives
• Eye infections from poor hygiene
• Natural lash damage or loss
• Irritation or injury to the delicate eye area
• Difficulty removing extensions by not having them removed by a professional lash technician
Financial Considerations
• Initial application costs approximately £45-75 – prices vary salon to salon
• Regular maintenance every 2-4 weeks, usually a 1-hour appointment, charges are usually 50% of the original treatment, £22.50 – £37.50
• Removal fees – This is a chargeable treatment – prices vary salon to salon
Aftercare & lifestyle Impact:
• Restrictions on the use of eye makeup and oil-based products on or near the eyelash extensions
• Careful sleeping positions required (sleeping on your back recommended)
• Swimming and exercise limitations (swimming goggles recommended)
• Time commitment for maintenance appointments to keep lashes full & healthy
Making the Right Decision:
When teenagers express interest in lash extensions, parents should consider several factors:
Maturity Level – Can your teenagers follow detailed aftercare instructions?
Are they responsible for current beauty routines?
Motivation
Is this request driven by genuine personal preference or external pressure? Discuss the underlying reasons for wanting eyelash extensions…
Research:
Investigate local salons thoroughly, checking credentials, reviews, and safety protocols.
Visit potential salons & individual lash technicians together.
Trial Period:
Consider starting with shorter-term options like lash lifts or high-quality mascara to gauge commitment.
Communication:
Maintain open communication about beauty standards, self-image, & the difference between enhancement and necessity.
Alternative lash treatments for Younger Teenagers
For parents uncomfortable with eyelash extensions for younger teenagers, here are several alternatives that can or may satisfy the need for enhanced lashes:
• Lash Lifts: Semi-permanent curling treatment lasting 6-8 weeks
• Quality Mascara: High-end formulas can provide dramatic results
• False Lashes: Daily application teaches technique and allows experimentation
• Lash Serums: Growth-promoting treatments for naturally fuller lashes
• Professional Makeup Lessons
If you decide to allow eyelash extensions for your teenager…
Choose a qualified, trained lash technician.
Do your research, and only choose a certified lash technician with proper training & insurance.
Check out their reviews & what professional lash supplies they are using.
Start Conservative
Begin with a more natural look rather than dramatic volume.
Set Clear Expectations – Discuss maintenance costs, time commitments, and consequences for poor aftercare.
Monitor Initial Results
Watch for any signs of reaction or discomfort in the first few days.
The Bottom Line…
The decision about eyelash extensions for teenagers ultimately depends on individual circumstances & maturity levels.
While there’s no universal “right” age, most experts suggest waiting until at least 18 when teenagers have greater responsibility & decision-making capabilities.
Parents should prioritize safety over trends, ensuring any beauty treatments are performed by qualified professionals in hygienic, clean conditions.
Open communication about beauty standards, self-worth, & the temporary nature of physical lash enhancements can help teens make informed decisions about their appearance.
Remember that teenage years are crucial for developing a healthy self-image.
Whether you choose to allow eyelash extensions or suggest alternatives, the focus should remain on helping your teenager feel confident & beautiful in their skin, with or without cosmetic enhancements.
Consider starting conversations about beauty & self-expression early, creating an environment where teens feel comfortable discussing their desires and concerns.
Letting them know that they are naturally beautiful and perfect just as they are!
