Understanding Eyelash Extensions: The Foundation

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent fibers attached to natural eyelashes to enhance length, curl, fullness, & thickness.

Unlike temporary strip lashes, eyelash extensions are applied individually to each natural lash, creating a seamless, natural appearance that can last for weeks & weeks.

The history of eyelash enhancement dates back to ancient Egypt, but modern eyelash extensions as we know them originated in South Korea & Japan in the early 2000s.

Since then, the technique has evolved significantly, becoming one of the most sought-after beauty treatments worldwide!

Essential Procedure Tools Required:

Before diving into application techniques, let’s explore the tools of the trade:

Eyelash Extensions: These are available in a synthetic PBT material in various lengths (typically 7-16mm), curls (J, B, C, D, L,& M), & thicknesses (0.05-0.25mm).

Eyelash Adhesives: Medical-grade cyanoacrylate formulations are designed specifically for eyelash extensions.

Understanding the eyelash adhesive chemistry, bonding properties, & how humidity can affect the lash application is super important! (Guidelines from your supplier may vary)

Procedure Tools: Precision tweezers for lash Isolation & pickup (straight, curved & deep-angled V tweezers).

Jade Stone, Glue Dots, Glue Trays,Glue Holders, Lash & Brow Wash, Lash Bonders, Lash Sealers, Lash Primers, Lash Remover,Microfibre Brushes & Under Eye Gel Pads.

Workspace Setup: Proper lighting (preferably LED), a comfortable salon couch/portable couch if mobile, an adjustable stool & adequate ventilation.

Client Consultation: The Key to Satisfaction

A thorough consultation should address:

  1. Client’s natural lash condition (length, thickness, curl)
  2. Desired outcome (natural, glamorous, or somewhere in between)
  3. Lifestyle considerations (swimming, hot yoga, oil-based products)
  4. Medical concerns (allergies, eye conditions, medications)
  5. Patch test every client & repeat if clients haven’t had eyelash extensions for over 6 x months (or changes in their medical health)
  6. Maintenance expectations & aftercare commitment

Remember to take before photos & have clients sign medical patch test & consent forms acknowledging potential risks & aftercare maintenance requirements.

The Application Process: Step by Step

Preparation

  1. Thoroughly cleanse the client’s lashes with a Lash & Brow Foaming Wash
  2. Apply Lint free under eye gel pads to cover & protect the bottom lashes
  3. Apply Lash Primer to the natural lashes to restore the PH balance using Microfibre Brushes
  4. Lash map onto the eye gel pad (individual to every client)
  5. Isolate the natural lashes using isolation tweezers

Application Technique

  1. Choose the correct eyelash extensions based on the client’s natural lash health, length & curl (use the lash mapping technique)
  2. Using a Jade Stone or Glue Tray, decant a small amount of lash adhesive & replenish every 10 minutes, depending on the humidity in your work space
  3. Dip or slide the eyelash extension into the lash adhesive depending on what lash technique you are using (Volume, YY, W, or classics, etc.)
  4. Place the extension 0.5-1mm from the eyelid; ensure to never touch the skin
  5. Place the eyelash extension on top or underneath the natural lash
  6. Hold in place for 2-3 seconds to allow initial bonding
  7. Continue across the entire lash line, working methodically 5-6 eyelash extensions on each eye to maintain symmetry
  8. Make sure to comb the lashes throughout the application to ensure there are no stickies & all of the eyelash extensions have bonded correctly
  9. Once you are happy with your lash application, finally apply the lash bonder/cure using a Microfibre Brush

Safety Considerations

  1. Never allow lash adhesive to come into contact with the skin or mucous membranes of the eye
  2. Ensure proper ventilation to minimize lash adhesive fume sensitivity
  3. Use only professional medical-grade lash supplies to reduce allergic reactions
  4. Never apply eyelash extensions to damaged or unhealthy natural lashes
  5. Never apply eyelash extensions to clients with eye infections, cuts, or bruises around the eye area (contraindications that are taught during a lash training course)
  6. Never apply eyelash extensions to clients who have reacted to a patch test
  7. ALWAYS Patch test at least 48 x hours before application
  8. Make sure all of your tools are sanitised before & after every client

Advanced Techniques: Elevating your skills

Volume Lashing

Volume lash techniques involve applying multiple lightweight extensions to a single natural lash, creating dramatic fullness without overloading the natural lashes.

This requires advanced skills in:

  • Creating handmade fans (2D- 9D) using lightweight extensions (typically 0.05-0.10mm) Take the stress out of volume lashes by trying Pre-made Volume Fans
  • Hybrid using pre-made fans & classics for a textured lash look
  • Proper weight distribution & usage of lash adhesive to prevent damage to the natural lashes
  • Maintaining consistency & fan symmetry

Styling Techniques

Different eye shapes require different lash mapping styles:

  • Almond Eyes: Enhance the natural shape with the longest lashes at the outer third
  • Round Eyes: Create elongation with longer lashes at the outer corners
  • Hooded Eyes: Use stronger curls to lift & open the eye
  • Downturned Eyes: Place longest lashes at the center to create lift
  • Close-Set Eyes: Focus volume on the outer corners to create width

Troubleshooting

Lash Retention Problems – Poor lash retention often stems from:

  • Not enough prep, i.e, lack of cleansing the natural lashes before lash application
  • Lash Primer not used
  • Improper humidity & temperature control (causing shock polymerization, resulting in poor lash bonding)
  • Incorrect lash adhesive application
  • Incorrect lash adhesive used
  • Incorrect use of lashes, i.e., weight, length, or curl
  • Client aftercare not followed correctly

Irritation & Allergic Reactions

When clients experience discomfort:

  • Remove eyelash extensions immediately if redness, swelling, or itching occurs
  • Document any reactions & adjust future treatments accordingly (if a reaction has occurred, the client will be unable to have eyelash extensions in the future)
