What is a Lash Lift? Traditional vs Korean
Here is what you need to know before booking your treatment.
About lash lifting
Many years ago, when AHFrancis Professional Beauty (now KG Lash Supplies) helped bring lash perming to the UK, the treatment took off across salons. From there, salons and clients embraced Eyelash Extensions, Lash Glues, Lash Lifting and Brow Lamination.
Low-maintenance options like lifted lashes and groomed brows remain popular today. While sales of eyelash extensions dipped after COVID, many clients still love them and rebook regularly.
How the treatment works
A lash lift is a natural, semi-permanent treatment that enhances your own lashes to appear thicker and longer by lifting them from the root for a soft, natural curl. A rich blue-black tint is often applied to boost depth and definition for that fresh, wide-awake look.
Modern lash lifts use reusable silicone lash lift shields rather than traditional perming rods. The key difference is the finish: rods tend to create a tighter curl, whereas silicone shields give a softer, more natural lift.
Both lash lifting and lash perming are low to no maintenance compared with eyelash extensions. A lift can also be used a few days before an extension set on very straight natural lashes that lie flat on the pads. Using a slightly larger shield can add a subtle curl so extensions sit and style better, especially for a special occasion. You can also improve comfort during extensions with quality under eye gel pads, which helps keep lower lashes tidy.
Results and longevity
A lash lift is semi-permanent and typically lasts around 6–8 weeks. Due to the natural lash growth cycle, things can start to look a little untidy after about five weeks.
- Top-up tint: a quick tint at roughly the four-week mark can refresh definition.
- Conditioning: a nourishing treatment like Lash Botox can help with longevity and softness.
- Technique: correct shield size and processing times, plus good aftercare, are essential.
Troubleshooting potential issues
- Wrong shield or rod size can cause too much or too little curl.
- Under-processing or over-processing can affect results. Over-processing may lead to coarse, brittle, or over-curled lashes. Always follow manufacturer guidance.
- Aftercare not followed can shorten longevity.
Every client’s lashes and growth cycle are different. Set expectations clearly before treatment and tailor advice accordingly.
Prep before your lash lift
- Have a patch test at least 24 hours before your appointment.
- Avoid eye makeup for your patch test and treatment day.
- Remove contact lenses and bring your glasses.
- Avoid lash curlers beforehand.
- Avoid waterproof mascara for at least 48 hours before treatment.
Post-treatment aftercare
For the first 24–48 hours:
- Avoid getting lashes wet and avoid steamy showers, hot yoga, saunas and sunbeds.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes.
- Avoid heavy eye makeup and oily removers. If cleansing is needed, choose a gentle option like our Aftercare: lash and brow cleanser.
Ongoing care:
- Avoid eye masks that press on the lashes and avoid eyelash curlers.
- Choose water-based mascara rather than waterproof.
- Avoid oily removers or products around the eye area.
Types of lash lift: Traditional vs Korean
There are several professional systems on the market. Traditional systems commonly use Thioglycolate to reshape the lash. Korean-style systems focus on a gentler profile, typically using Cysteamine/Keratin, plus hydrators like hyaluronic acid and glycerine for conditioning. Some Korean systems mix a powder with Step 1 to form a paste that helps hold lashes onto the reusable shield instead of relying on classic adhesive. If you prefer adhesive, a quality lash lift adhesive is part of the traditional method.
When the correct shield size is chosen and the timing is right, both approaches can last 6–8 weeks. Korean variants can be a good option for sensitive clients while still delivering lasting lift. Either way, you still use a reusable silicone shield rather than a perm roller, and the overall lifted look remains comparable.
Treatment times generally fall between 45 and 75 minutes, usually including a tint.
Traditional vs Korean – comparison table
| Feature | Traditional Lash Lift | Korean Lash Lift |
|---|---|---|
| Primary actives | Typically Thioglycolate | Cysteamine/Keratin with hydrating agents (e.g. hyaluronic acid, glycerine) |
| How lashes are fixed to shield | Usually with adhesive | Often a powder-plus-Step 1 paste to help hold without classic adhesive |
| Finish | Trusted, consistent results; can be paired with a correct shield size for softer or stronger lift | Gentle profile aims to minimise lash dryness while maintaining lift |
| Sensitivity | Some clients find it slightly harsher | Often chosen by sensitive clients |
| Longevity | Typically 6–8 weeks with proper aftercare | Typically 6–8 weeks with proper aftercare |
| Great for | Clients who love a tried-and-tested system and do not wish to re-patch test | Clients seeking a gentler approach without sacrificing lift |
FAQ
How long does a lash lift last?
Usually 6–8 weeks. Around four weeks in, a quick tint can refresh depth and definition.
Is a lash lift high maintenance?
No. Lash lifts are low to no maintenance compared with extensions. Follow aftercare in the first 24–48 hours and avoid oil-based products to help results last.
Should I choose Traditional or Korean?
Both deliver a lifted look that lasts. Korean systems aim for a gentler profile, which some sensitive clients prefer. Your tech will recommend the best option based on your lash condition and goals.
Can I wear mascara after a lash lift?
Yes, but wait at least 48 hours. Choose a water-based mascara rather than waterproof and avoid curlers.
Can a lift help before eyelash extensions?
Yes. On very straight lashes, a subtle pre-lift with the right shield size can help extensions sit better for a more styled finish. Comfortable application also benefits from good under eye gel pads.
