Why Oil & Lash Extensions Don’t Mix
The Science Behind Premature Lash Shedding!
As a lash artist, there’s nothing more frustrating than a client returning for an infill after just one week with noticeably fewer eyelash extensions than expected…
Your application was precise, your isolation was perfect & your environment was carefully controlled.
So, what happened?
One potential factor is often found in your client’s skincare routine: oil & product build-up around the lash line.
Understanding how oils, skincare products & natural sebum can affect eyelash extensions is an important part of client education.
Sharing this information can help your client maintain better lash hygiene, & improve the appearance of the eyelash extensions & protect the natural lashes underneath.
The Science: How Oil Can Affect Lash Adhesive
Professional eyelash adhesives are primarily based on cyanoacrylate, which cures through a chemical process called polymerisation.
During curing, the lash adhesive forms a strong polymer bond between the natural lash & extension.
Once cured, cyanoacrylate is generally resistant to everyday exposure to water, but certain cosmetic ingredients, oils & solvents can affect the lash adhesive over time.
Oil doesn’t simply “dissolve” cured lash adhesive. Instead, oil & product residue can interfere with the bond, contribute to build-up around the lash line & potentially reduce retention, particularly when combined with inadequate lash cleansing.
There’s another important consideration: excessive product around the lash line can make the lashes feel heavy, affect their appearance & make it more difficult to keep the eyelash extensions clean.
The result?
Premature shedding, poor lash retention & lashes that don’t look as fresh between appointments.
It’s Not Just About Fallout: Volume Fans Can Be Affected Too
Oil & product build-up can also affect the appearance of Volume & Hybrid eyelash extensions.
When sebum, moisturiser, makeup or other residue accumulates around the lashes, delicate volume fans can become coated in product.
This can cause the fan to lose its fluffy, separated appearance, making the lashes look less defined.
Rather than beautifully separated, lightweight fans, you may notice lashes beginning to look heavier, clumped or less fluffy.
Regular, gentle cleansing is therefore essential for both retention & appearance.
What Else Can Build Up Around the Lash Line?
Oil doesn’t only come from skincare products.
Your clients naturally produce sebum, the skin’s natural oil.
Depending on their skin type, lifestyle & environment, some clients may experience more oil build-up than others.
Other potential sources include:
Cleansing Balms & Facial Oils
Excellent for removing makeup, but they may leave residue around the eye area if they aren’t thoroughly removed.
Rich Eye Creams
Heavy creams applied close to the lash line can migrate onto the extensions, particularly overnight.
Makeup & Makeup Removers
Certain makeup products & removers can leave behind oils, emollients or residue that may accumulate around the lashes.
Natural Sebum
Even clients who use completely lash-safe products still naturally produce oil.
This is why regular lash cleansing is so important!
Why Lash Hygiene Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions is that clients should avoid washing their eyelash extensions to make them last longer.
The opposite is true.
Clean lashes are happy lashes!
Daily cleansing helps remove:
- Natural oils
- Makeup residue
- Skincare products
- Dead skin cells
- Sweat
- Dust & environmental debris
Allowing this build-up to remain around the lash line can make the eyelash extensions look dull, clumped & less fluffy, while also making good lash hygiene more difficult.
A clean lash line provides a much better environment for maintaining beautiful-looking extensions between appointments.
How To Help Protect Lash Retention
Retention is a partnership between the lash technician & the client.
Your technique, adhesive, preparation & salon environment all matter, but so does what happens once your client leaves the salon.
In The Salon: Preparation Is Key
Before beginning an application, make sure the natural lashes are thoroughly cleansed & free from makeup, skincare residue & excessive oil.
A professional lash cleanser can help remove surface debris & prepare the lashes for treatment.
Depending on your adhesive & salon protocol, a professional lash primer & lash bonder may also be used to help prepare the natural lashes before application.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the adhesive & preparation products you use.
At-Home Educate Your Clients: Good aftercare starts with simple, consistent habits…
Encourage Clients To:
Use lash-safe products
Recommend products specifically designed to be suitable for eyelash extensions, particularly around the eye area.
Clean their lashes every day
Gentle daily cleansing helps prevent oil, makeup & debris from accumulating around the lash line.
Avoid picking or pulling
Clients should never pick, pull or rub their extensions, as this can unnecessarily damage their natural lashes.
Be gentle when drying
After cleansing, gently blot the lashes rather than rubbing them with cotton wool or towels.
Attend regular infills
Regular maintenance appointments help keep extensions looking full, fresh & beautifully maintained.
